Re: John Jeffrey.

Oregon Botanical Expedition. "At a meeting of Gentlemen interested in the promotion of the Arboriculture and Horticulture of Scotland, held in the Botanical Gardens on the 22d of November, 1849,-
Professor Balfour in the Chair, on the motion of Lord Murray, seconded by Mr. George Patton, it was unanimously resolved, "to send out a collector to the western parts of North America to secure seeds of hardy trees, shrubs and flowers. John Jeffrey, gardener to a son-in-law of Sir Walter Scott, was selected for the purpose at the instance of Prof. John Hutton Balfour.

As appears from the printed minutes (distributed as folio leaflets and some of them marked in print "Private") the Secretary was Mr. Andrew Murray. Jeffrey embarked on the H.B. Co's ship, Prince of Wales, and wrote a long letter to Dr. Balfour, June 11, 1850, expressing his gratitude and promise of zeal. "I am all in order for my harvest if it be the will of God to continue to bless me with the same bountiful supply of health which he has been so graciously pleased to bestow on me in times past. I am in excellent spirits, fearing nothing that may be before.
He writes again, see printed letter, from Jaspers House, Rocky Mountains, April 7, 1851, desrib[ing]
