Restaurants here few and mainly poor, but there does not seem to be the stinginess in serving that one finds in London. In my hotel in London there were two sugar bowls for the dining room. You called for sugar for your damson plums, the waiter brought it, you helped yourself and he took it away! The slices of bread were small always. Bread is relatively one of the most expensive things one can order in a London restaurant. Talk about small economies. I saw a well-dressed young man (not shabby genteel) pick up a bit of a banana out of the gutter and eat it. He was gloved and had fine linen! A man will cut off the end of his cigar and save the bit for smoking in a piper later, tucking it away in his vest pocket! I saw a man searching sidewalk for small articles-pins, cigar stubs, etc. Here in Scotland at this hotel there are no matches in the room. The gas is lit by a little taper from the light in the hallway. In England you get one face towel and one bath towel per week! Even where you pay 40c to _2.00 per day monthly rates for your room! Here in Scotland they treat me better. The towel is changed after three days.
