13_32 [Brussels Botanic Garden] August 3, 1905 Forest plantations are admirable and well arranged. They stand 5 or 6 ft. high and show radial and tangential sections. In the entry area is a statue, B.C.J. Dumortier, 1797-1878. There is in the collection of woods a great line tree section 300 years old, hollow, but some 8 or 9 ft. across. There are good examples shown of tree diseases. -In the hot houses is a good plant of Macrozamia horida, the stem globe-like, as large as a large water bucket and leaves with spiny Colletia-like leaflets. Also Encephalartos Altensteinii, with barrel-like body and simple pinnate fronds 6 ft. long. -Amicia zygomeris, Mexico. The most striking sensitive plant I ever saw, the 4 large leaflets at the |
