13_18 Liege, Belgium [August 1, 1905] The street cars are here called Tramways, the word being introduced from England. The fare is 10 centimes, 2d class, or 15 centimes, 1st class. The streets are all paved with square or rectangular block but are quite smooth. The trees are Lindens, fine specimens here on the banks of the Meuse when I sit; 70 ft. high. They throw their limbs high and planted at about 25 foot intervals. This street is on the stone embankment of the river. Next the river wall is the tram track, overhead trolley. 13_19 [Liege, Belgium] August 1, 1905 is a bracket supporting an octagonal box about 4 ft. in diameter in which plants are growing, geraniums, nasturtiums, some agave-like thing but leaves very slender_, the whole so tasteful and designed so well that it suggested cut material skillfully inserted. But no, there they were as far as I could see and remarkably uniform. The standard street tree, everywhere seems to be the Linden. The streets are very clean being kept scrubbed by men sweepers and in the narrow streets mostly by women.
