13_154 Glasgow, Scotland [September 10, 1905] Dr. Lang was very hospitable, taking me to luncheon, where I had a pleasant half-hour with his family (mother and sister). Then he took me to the Botanic Garden. This has no official connection with the university nor is it under scientific management but rather horticultural management. However they have an arrangement of good will by which the Botany people are supplied with material which they especially need. The range of greenhouses contains the usual display of ferns, acacias, araucarias, euphorbias, etc. But the thing of greatest interest to a botanist is the Hepatic Green home - a house in which the light is subdued, and filled with a great variety of liverworts - and also a variety of |
13_155 [Glasgow, Scotland] September 10, 1905 mosses and filmy ferns - all doing splendidly, of fine color and vigorous growth. I do not wonder that they are proud of it and it is a fitting thing for Bower to have done. They spoke of Campbell - everyone almost does - he is such a traveler that he has an extensive acquaintance and his gentlemanly qualities and sound scholarship commend him to our "English cousins." The Glasgow people are not as good-looking as the Edinburgh people. The Edinburgh girls are much handsomer, although I saw more well-dressed girls in Glasgow during my short stay. |
