13_152 Glasgow, Scotland [September 10, 1905] the gallery with Burbidge he indulged in a running comment on the pictures and their artists that we passed, showing much familiarity with the history of art and much penetrating criticism and appreciative power. Joshua Reynold's portrait of a boy, so commonly seen in prints, is here and many others by the same and by the stronger Scottish artists. The next day I went to the University of Glasgow. The quadrangle, with an imposing front, stands on a hill, with a number of other buildings to the rear and to the sides. 13_153 [Glasgow, Scotland] September 10, 1905 very comfortable. Bower was not in Glasgow but Dr. Lang, assisted by [blank space], received me and in response to my request for the Lay and Collie and Douglas plants of the Botany of the Beechey, said to be here, attempted to give me what I wanted. My notes concerning this matter will be found some pages ahead. The Herbarium is quite large, 30 or 40,000 sheets I should guess, arranged not according to the Engler and Prantl but the old-fashioned Bentham and Hooker sequence - for no one has touched this Herbarium in years. The species are not arranged in any way so that it is difficult to find what one wants. Lang and his friend were very zealous in my behalf but to slight avail. |
