13_14 Leiege [July 28, 1905] Sunday, we could not get anything to drink. Finally we went into a back street, into a barn, climbed over a lot of hay, then up some difficult steps and finally into a room very small and very dirty, where we found all the principal people of the town assembled. There we got something to drink. That is prohibition! He added: I do not understand that kind of legislation. To say that people shall not drink-that is impossible to enforce. If there are bad drinks, bad drinks for the people, punish the manufacturers-that is the way."-Of course the inim[itable] |
13_15 [Leiege] July 28, 1905 [inim]itable humor of this story is lost recording it in this way. Germany, France and Mexico sent delegates, as did also other European countries. The papers presented were mainly in print so that the discussions were based on definite reports. -The University exhibits, particularly that of Louvain were very good. In a botanical section were fine portraits of M. Martens, (1797-1863, Prof. Bot. Louvain), Ch. Morren (1807-58) and Ed. Morren (1883-1886), Professors of Bot. at Liege, the latter the Bromeliad man. Also one of Crepin of Brussels, Direct. Jardin Bot. de l'Etat, the Rose Revision Man and author of a Manual of the Flora of Belgium. |
