13_116 Royal Bot. Gard. [Botanical Garden] September 6, 1905 John Jeffrey, cont. [continued] -Pinus Jeffreyi. Needle clusters only. 8 to 10 inches long. His locality, Sacramento River, mentioned previously refers to the sources near Shasta where he coll. [collected] (Saxifraga peltata). "The Indians eat the stalks, when they are young, of this plant, I tryed them myself and found them very good. Flowers pink. June 11, 1853." The above is taken from the inventory of the box forwarded from San Francisco, Dec. 16, 1853. Further transcripts from the same: "Abies amabilis, no. 1480. From near the summit of the Sierra Nevada. Lat. 39 degrees [?2?] degrees Alt'de [Altitude] 7500 feet growing on clay soil I climbed a great many trees without succeeding |
13_117 [Royal Botanical Garden] Edinburgh Sept. 6, 1905 in getting good seed of this tree. All the cones seemed to be destroyed by frost before the seed was matured. Tree 3 feet in diameter 200 feet high growing in dense forests bark rough similar to the bark of A. nobilis. Young trees covered with balsam blisters." "Aceraceae, No. 1490 Bay of San Francisco, Nov. 20th, 1853." He is reported as having secured Pinus Coulteri. His note reads: "Pinus Coulteri ?? Foothills of the Sierra Nevada" (=P. Sabiniana!) |
