13_114 Royal Bot. [Botanical] Garden [Edinburgh, Sept. 6, 1905] John Jeffrey, cont. [continued] and make for San Francisco on my arrival there this autumn I hope have a letter from you giving me further instructions. (Address J.J. care of H.B.M. Consul at San Francisco to be called for). I rem'n [remain] Sir, Your Humble Ser't [Servant] John Jeffrey To J.H.B., M.D. Reg's Prof'r of Botany In the Univ'ty of Edinburgh. The Herbarium material in representation of Jeffrey's numbers is scanty. I do not find any cover of Jeffrey's ticketed as collected by Jeffrey. The cones in the [?spms?]are long like those figured in the plate. |
13_115 [Royal Botanical Garden] Edinburgh, Sept. 6, 1905 No. 740. Pinus Murrayana. Jeffrey's label on the Her. spm. [Herbarium specimen] reads thus: "Found on the Siskiyou Mountains in Lat. 43 degrees 300 elevation 7500 feet growing on moist deep loamy soil Oct. 21st. This all the cones I could procure. Tree 40 feet high, of a conical form." (The leaves = 1 1/2 - 1 3/4 in. [inches] long, the cone open, globose, a little over 1 1/4 in diam. [diameter]. Has lost its prickles. W.J.) Another spm. [specimen] of same sp. [species] is labeled in Jeffrey's hand: Summit of Sierra Nevada Mountains near Walker's Pass, Sept. 20, 1853. Pinus monticola! was coll. [collected] by Jeffrey in Trinity Mountains, 7000 ft. Volcanic Rocky Summits, Oct. 7, 1852. |
