In another circular, -proof copy not dated, -the Committee laments "the painful position in which they were placed

by the absence of communications from their collector, Mr. Jeffrey."
xx "In the earlier part of his career, Mr. Jeffrey had proved his possession of the qualities befitting a Botanical Collector, -a fact which made his desertion of duty only the more to be regretted." A portion of Jeffrey's intended salary was diverted "to employ Mr. Beardsley, a well-known Botanist and Collector, of San Francisco" whose collection of seeds of Pinus Benthamiania, etc. are to be distributed immediately to subscribers.
