13_110 Royal Bot. [Botanical] Garden [Edinburgh, Sept. 6, 1905] John Jeffrey, cont. [continued] is not satisfactory, at the same time purposing to dispense with his services: "latterly Mr. Jeffrey has not paid that attention to their instructions which they were entitled to expect." The numbers in the list run as high as 1476. The localities, in addition to those previously cited, are: Rogue River Valley Headwaters of the Sacramento River Sacramento Valley. Clear Creek, N. Calif. Sierra Nevada Mountains and "East Flank" of same American River Applegate River. S. Oregon Bay of San Francisco Also the note: "3 cones of Pinus Coulteri. (Seeds bad)" In another circular, -proof copy not dated, -the Committee laments "the painful position in which they were placed |
13_111 [Royal Botanical Garden] Edinburgh, Sept. 6, 1905 by the absence of communications from their collector, Mr. Jeffrey." xx "In the earlier part of his career, Mr. Jeffrey had proved his possession of the qualities befitting a Botanical Collector, -a fact which made his desertion of duty only the more to be regretted." A portion of Jeffrey's intended salary was diverted "to employ Mr. Beardsley, a well-known Botanist and Collector, of San Francisco" whose collection of seeds of Pinus Benthamiania, etc. are to be distributed immediately to subscribers.
