John Jeffrey cont. [continued] debris. Sept. 29, 1852. =Pinus (attenuata). Elevation 5000 (?) feet. ___Cones ovate, crowded together, when matured of an orange color, very hard, adhering to the tree. In several instances I numbered twenty whorls of cones on the trunk, being the growth of as many years. xxx The few specimens that I saw did not appear to be more than thirty years old. They were about 40 feet high, growing on poor sandy soil. October 1, 1852. =Pinus (Jeffreyi). Shasta Valley. xxx Tree 150 ft. [feet] high and 4 in. [inches] diameter. Oct. 24, 1852. =Pinus monticola. Trinity Mts., xx 7000 feet, October 7, 1852.

He also collected things at Shasta Butte, Sept. 30, 1852; Umpqua River and Valley, August 14, 1852; Wallamet Valley, July 26, 1852. Only a few of the items are here transcribed. =The next leaflet, not dated, gives the botanical determinations of the numbers in the previous list, accompanied by annotations on the specimens and diagnoses of new species and 4 plates. The original diagnoses are as follows: "618.-Pinus Balfouriana. Oreg. Com. Leaves crowded in clusters of 2, 3, 4, and 5; about 1 inch long, curved, glaucous, below. Cones dark brown.
