-Clumps of Laurel as big as a house "shaven off" by the wind, the wind-ward side defoliaged in places, and the limbs straight and close. At a distance the clump mistaken for a great weathered rock, moss-covered. -Reasons for barren hills- long hot dry summers, seedlings not being able to establish root system to tide over summer; winds; grass drying up ground, the transpiration being great, other places too wet in spring or winter, too dry in summer. Also failure of seed distribution.
