10_96 Briceland - The woodsman seem to have a grudge against the Madrona. Everywhere one sees axe-scars, blazes, peels, etc. It is very easy to cut the name in it. The great sheets are often taken off; so often about here that I concluded small boys were doing it for fun. Not exactly for that reason merely, and yes. They use these pieces for sleds in sliding down hill because they are so slick. We can peel the Madrona with a jack-knife say the half-breed boys; and nearly all children hereabouts are half-breeds. Garberville is the white town and I noted many exceptionally pretty young women in that region. -- But to return to the Briceland half-breed boys -- they also make horns out of the Madrona bark rolling it in such a way that a great noise can be produced with the finished product. - Apropos of the recent assasination of King Alexander and Queen Draga and the failure of the Minister of War to get control [?] over the telephone, there is a fine skit in Life of May 14, 1903 amplifying the anachronism of Julius Caesar and the telephone. |
