- Wagner says that a Frenchman had a tannery at Mariposa in the sixties. He was an inexperienced tanner and made poor leather but it was not the fault of the manzanita leaves and twigs which he used. Wagner says he made some good leather. Reckless sort of fellow. French nobleman Blanville [Blauville?] was his name.
- A woodsman chopped away for nearly a week at a mighty monarch of the California forest and one day on going to the opposite side he found three chinamen who had been chopping away at the same tree for a month. -- Said the woodsman.
