There is too much of an attempt to peel trees which are not ready. They take off a rim by chopping it off, half a rim above and finally give it up in disgust. The woodsmen are always risking that the top of the tree will peel more easily than the butt and so many a log is 80 to 90 per cent wasted. There is always a certain waste -- a necessary waste -- but it should be a minimum, say 1%.

- There is a little cementery in the woods within 200 yards of the village where they have attempted to kill the Madronas -- and not one has as yet actually given up. About 5 or 6 years ago a big trunk was completely girdled and it has been slowly dying every since. Only one branch is really alive. The edges of the bark on the upper side of the girdle put down long tongues or lava flows as if in attempt to join the bark tissue below. Another tree succeeded in two places and there was a swollen place in each case like an arm for the whole tree top had to be supported through these two channels. In the
