- Black Oak leaves do not disorganize quickly. Their ensigns or signatures cover the ground thickly here.
- The California Demokrat of 1902 advertises Yerba Santa bitters. Also the California Pine Needle Co. (mattresses etc.)
- Fraxinus Oregana sprouts abundantly from stumps.
- Maul Oak - fuzz on under surface pollen-like acc. Mr. Mott.

- "Tan Oak, Black Oak, White Oak and Live Oak and White Live Oak -- these are the oaks around here" -- The man from Laytonville; he came by, with a wheel[_], dragging a barrel which he had fixed up with a pole so that it would roll! And it ran very easy! He wanted to get it 8 mi. down the road and no man would hire him a team, so he proceeded about it Yankee-wise. He says he has Tan Oak on his claim east of here: - here being our camp spot for the night on Long Valley creek within half-mile of the Rancho Primero's northern ranch house.
