10_18 Van Arsdale's Ranch in tree just about 250 yds east, 15 ft. 2. in at 4 ft. All of the trees hereabouts are very large. The first tree furnished specimen No. 2190. Quercus Garryana Hook. Dougl. No. 2191. Quercus Morehus Good type of it. No. 2192. Quercus, with half Wislizenii & half Morehus blood. Tree stands next to 2191 No. 2193. Quercus, still nearer to Wislizenii. In fact would pass for that. Leaves of this cannot be distinguished from most of 2192. Some leaves of 2192 indistinguishable from some of 2191 except in size of teeth. All three trees standing closely together! Each no. = one tree!! |
10_19 Walker Valley, June 5, 1903 - Cluster of Redwoods in Walker Valley - This is a country where we have opens, round-headed oaks & madrones, and conifers -- just enough Douglas Spruce and Yellow Pine to give a variety to the mountain uplands. Look south and one sees from beyond Willits -- forested slopes dominated by conifers -- look north and you see an openly wooded country. - Walker Valley to Willits at Summit there is in 600 [?] ft. square Madrona, Douglas Spruce, Yellow Pine, Garry Oak, Black Oak. - Some fine Maul Oaks along road for about 2 miles before Van Arsdale's - Two Calif oaks have a variation peculiar to themselves, entire and very toothed leaves on same branchlet!
