10_172 Lyon's Valley to Ukiah (Miyakma Range) - Purdy's Coast Range garden will be in time a most unique affair. At present he has been at work on it only a year. All of the tangle of bushes, etc had to be cleared out but he has already effected a transformation. He has Darlingtonia californica growing in fine style and other rare things. Of course it is especially in the lilies that he excels. He has amassed a most wonderful and exceedingly interesting as well as useful lot of information about the their methods of reproduction. So many have their own peculiar styles and ways of doing business or some slight modification of the plan prevailing in the genus or section. No. 2244. Same species and locality as 2243. |
10_173 July 2, 1903. - Mrs. Thos. L. Carruthers of this place has a kitchen floor of Tan Oak; it is oiled occasionally and scrubbed repeatedly -- twice a week. It was put down in 1884, has worn very little and shows no signs of rot. She says that if the parlor floor were to be of oak she could entertain no possible objection to Tan Oak. Mr. Carruthers here interposed and said that he had a great deal of experience with it and that it would never rot so long as it were kept from ground. (Whitehorn spoke of Tan Oak skid logs that on the under side would rot in one year -- on the upper would last two or three years). Carruthers |
