10_148 Melburne to Comptche [Mendocino Co] - A. McDonald, Comptche House, says second-growth redwood trees from stumps of trees cut 35 years ago by Albion Lumber Co. have been made into ties by him, 6 to 8 ties to a tree and all sapwood cut away. The Albion Lumber Co. has sold its railroad (18 miles of track) to the Santa Fe people. Their people are buying up all the Redwood lands that they can at _10.00, _15.00 and _20.00 per acre. Some people will not sell even at the higher price, believing in a still further advance. |
10_149 June 29, 1903. No. 2231. Azalea [Rhododendron occidentale Gray.] Along stream bank with 2229. Very fragrant. Note the blossoms fallen and hanging by the tips of the styles. No. 2232. Tan Oak. Stump sprouts in shade -- often russet or a rich brown. In sunlight and particularly on crown of tree the season's shoots are silvery. No. 2233. Lilium. [pardalinum Kell.] Streambank in sand with _2231 Segments recurved-underlapping, the lower 2/3 yellow, with brown blotches, upper 1/3 solid red. No. 2234. Halfway-House to Low Gap -- tree remarkable for its narrow leaves. |
