10_146 Melburne to Comptche [Mendocineo Co.] - Redwood cuttings -- trunk at 1 ft. (stump sprouts) 10 in. diam., 30 years old and 50 ft. h. Mr. Mott found one 20 [?] ft. h. which he thought 16 years old. The rate of growth of Redwood stump sprouts is something that has never been studied, is an exceedingly interesting field, and is ready and open for some one. No. 2229. 10_147 June 29, 1903. - Hazel trunks or rather poles are used by teamsters to bind down loads of ties, etc on a wagon load. They like them if they can get a pole large enough. They are very tough and strong, "can hardly break them." They are also used for broad-axe handles in making ties. For handles it must be possible to fashion them just right, as a handle must be turned one way for a right-handed man and the other way for a left-handed one. It was interesting to me to see a load of redwood ties bound fown with a hazel stick since in the Eastern states sled-loads of wood are bound down similarly with Ostrya or Carpinus |
