10_144 Melburne [Mendocino Co.] - Went into camp for the night at a beautiful spot by the stream 3 mi. e. of Melburne and 26 mi from Ft. Bragg acc. to the Shafsky road signs. There is a beautiful circle of redwoods, probably third generation, 17 x 28 ft. on the inside A number of cut and of burned redwoods here with downward growths along the stump from the stump sprouts which spring up on the edge of the stump at the cut surface. Trunk about 4 1/2 ft through at point_ Sprouts 5 & 7 in. diam each. Breadth of 2 downward growing portions = 13 in. |
