Taxonomic synonym:
Fucus laceratus S. Gmelin, 1768: 179, pl. XXI: fig. 4 (syntype localities: "India orientalis, et Haruici'' [Harwich, Essex, England]).
Note: The synonymy was proposed by Batters (1902: 75). The basis of "India orientalis'' is unknown. This species, which is well known in Atlantic Europe (see Maggs & Hommersand, 1993: 246), undoubtedly does not occur in the Indian Ocean.
