EXCLUDED RECORD

Conferva glomerata Linnaeus var. marina (Roth) Roth

Conferva cristata Roth var. marina Roth, 1800a: 514 (type locality: Oldenburg, Niedersachsen, Germany).

Conferva glomerata Linnaeus var. marina (Roth) Roth, 1806: 237.—Krauss, 1846: 215.— Areschoug, 1851: 12.

Note: Although Krauss reported a collection from Natal Bay, South Africa, under the name Conferva glomerata L. var. marina, without varietal author, the foregoing nomenclatural pedigree probably applies. There is no question that Krauss had a representative of Cladophora in hand, and Barton (1893: 55) referred to his record as Cladophora glomerata, without varietal designation. Areschoug (l.c.) thought that Conferva glomerata did not occur in South Africa and suggested that Krauss had a form of Conferva sericea Hudson (Cladophora sericea (Hudson) Kützing (q.v.) in hand. According to van den Hoek (1963: 169), Cladophora glomerata, although primarily a freshwater species, penetrates brackish water of relatively high salinity, where it is morphologically mostly indistinguishable from the marine species C. vagabunda (Linnaeus) van den Hoek [p. 782]. Cladophora glomerata var. marina Kützing (1845: 213; syntype localities: North Sea and Baltic Sea), which was transferred to C. laetevirens (Dillwyn) Kützing [p. 776] by Rabenhorst (1847: 110), is not pertinent since Krauss gave no indication that he was aware of Kützing's publication. Papenfuss (notes) searched unsuccessfully in various European herbaria for the specimen on which Krauss's record is based.
