LiteratureAs Tortula obtusissima Harthill et al. 1979; Koch 1950a.
IllustrationsSharp et al. 1994.
NotesThis species is strongly retuse compared to Syntrichia princeps or the smaller-celled Syntrichia montana. Syntrichia obtusissima has shorter leaves than Syntrichia princeps, with a ~1.5:1 length:width ratio not counting the hyline base. Sharp et al. (1994) and Mishler (in BFNA) say that Syntrichia obtusissima is a species of Mexican-Andean disjunction, implying that the California material is not to be called S. obtusissima; if so, it would seem to need another name.
