Cox & Urbatsch in Authors of Plant Names), in Castanea 59:309--311 (1994), elevated Rudbeckia californica A. Gray var. intermedia to species rank and named it Rudbeckia klamathensis [Rudbeckia intermedia McLeland had already been published (Natl. Hort. Mag. 2: 16. 1923)], citing morphological differences and biogeographical barriers leading to reproductive isolation between between Rudbeckia californica and Rudbeckia klamathensis.
