Oh in accordance with Authors of Plant Names principles) in Madroño 55:181--190 (2008) have established that Lithocarpus densiflorus belongs in a separate, new, monotypic genus, so they have named Notholithocarpus Manos, C.H. Cannon, & S. Oh, gen. nov., Notholithocarpus densiflorus (Hook. & Arn.) Manos, C.H. Cannon, & S. Oh, comb. nov., and Notholithocarpus densiflorus var. echinoides (R. Br. ter) Manos, C.H. Cannon, & S.
