Information from the Index of California Plant Names (ICPN)
Current Jepson Flora Project Misapplied Names Polypogon elongatus Kunth
Initial Editorial Analysis 16 Aug 2011
Source of Report for California Hrusa et al., Madrono 49(2)61-98. 2002: DIST: CCo: Hrusa et al. Current Status: No current information: DOC: Contra Costa Co.: near Martines. June 7, 1900, Burtt Davy 6662 (US); San Luis Obispo Co.: Oceano Beach in moist spots among sand dunes. July 18, 1947, R.F. Hoover 7314 (OBI, US): NOTES: Included in the Jepson Manual as P. elongatus Kunth, based on the two specimens cited above. Both of these recently re-determined by Robert Soreng (US) as P. imberbis. Hoover for San Luis Obispo Co. (1970) and especially Mason (1957) were uncomfortable with the P. elongatus determinations but did not suggest an alternative name.
Initial Editorial Comments according to Hrusa et al., status uncertain, yet conditions of cited occurrences evidently qualify for inclusion in the flora according to criteria employed by Jepson Flora Project, and said to have been included in The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1] as Polypogon elongatus, based on misidentifications (27 Feb 2003).
Correspondence and Comments Subsequent to Initial Analysis
Correspondence 1 15 May 2006 e-mail from Jeffrey A. Greenhouse see Comment 1
Editorial Comments 1 Correspondence 1 indicates that Polypogon imberbis was published by Johow (= Authors of Plant Names) in Est. Fl. Islas de Juan Fernandez 136 (1896), based on Nodwodworskya imberbis Phil. (Anales de la Universidad de Chile 43: 562. 1873), and that the citation of Björkman as publishing author in Hrusa et al. was a mistake, Björkman having published instead the synonym Chaetotropis imberbis (Phil.) Björkman (Symbolae Botanicae Upsaliensis 17(1): 14. 1960). [Therefore, author citation corrected to Polypogon imberbis (Phil.) Johow, from Polypogon imberbis (Phil.) Bjorkm. previously in this Index, 16 May 2006.]
