Melianthus major L.
MELIANTHACEAE
Initial Editorial Analysis 8 May 2007
Source of Report for California Correspondence 1
Correspondence and Comments Subsequent to Initial Analysis
Correspondence 1 14 Nov 2005 e-mail from Chris Meacham see Comment 1
Editorial Comments 1 Correspondence 1 indicates that: the draft Synthesis of the North American Flora, version 2.0 [Kartesz & Meacham], shows Melianthus major as a new introduction in Orange Co., citing Roberts, F.M. 1998. A Checklist of the Vascular Plants of Orange Co., California, 2nd edition; that, however, the Roberts publication states that Melianthus major was previously reported from Newport Back Bay, but that this report is undocumented and that Melianthus major should be removed from the checklist pending verification of its presence; that the Missouri Botanical Garden (MO) has a specimen, H.H. Schmidt & M. Merello 735, with a label indicating that it was collected in 1992 from the grounds of the San Diego Zoo, where the plant evidently was cultivated; that Melianthus major is considered invasive in Western Australia and is likely to become naturalized in CA; and that, nevertheless, the current degree of naturalization of Melianthus major in California is uncertain.
Correspondence 2 Treatment and author notes submitted for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] by Robert Preston see Comment 2
Editorial Comments 2 Correspondence 2 indicates that for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] Melianthus major L. is to be treated as only occurring in California under cultivation.
