Correspondence 1 | 13 Mar 2007 e-mail from Margriet Wetherwax see Comment 1
Editorial Comments 1 | Correspondence 1 indicates that, according to John Sawyer (author of genus for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2]), Rhamnus alaternus L. is to be treated as a garden escape in The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2], for SCo (Newport Bay), based in part on Clarke et al. 2006. Flora of the Santa Ana River and environs.
Correspondence 2 | 9 Feb 2012 e-mail from Eric Wrubel see Comment 2
Editorial Comments 2 | Correspondence 2 indicates that whereas the species epithet in the entry heading is "alaterna", it is "alaternus" in Correspondence 1 Editorial Comments. [Linnaeus published the name, in 1753 (Species Plantarum), as Rhamnus Alaternus, with the epithet capitalized, meaning that he was treating it as a noun. A check of Index Nominum Genericorum in fact does indicate a rhamnaceous genus named Alaternus, for which this species was probably named. Nouns used as species epithets do not have to agree grammatically with the genus name (if they did, "alaterna" would be correct, based on the fact that Rhamnus is generally treated as feminine now, whereas Linnaeus evidently treated it as masculine), according to ICPN, Vienna Code, Art. 23.5, "The specific epithet, when adjectival in form and not used as a noun, agrees grammatically with the generic name; when it is a noun in apposition or a genitive noun, it retains its own gender and termination irrespective of the gender of the generic name. Epithets not conforming to this rule are to be corrected (see Art. 32.7)." Therefore, spelling of epithet corrected to Rhamnus alaternus L., from Rhamnus alaterna L. previously in this Index, 9 Feb 2012.]
