| Editorial Comments 1 | Correspondence 1 indicates that, according to Donald J. Pinkava (Haseltonia 4:103. 1996), the name Opuntia californica (Torr. & A. Gray) Coville (1899), based on Cereus californicus Torr. & A. Gray (1840), must be used instead of Opuntia parryi Engelm (1852): for many years the name Opuntia californica Engelm. (1848), for a plant not occurring in California, was considered to have priority [over Opuntia californica (Torr. & A. Gray) Coville], so that Opuntia parryi Engelm. has been used instead [for the taxon in CA]; however, Pinkava explained "New plant names published in Engelmann's 1848 letter to Emory are provisional (ICBN Art 34.1(b). . .) and therefore not valid. . .O. californica Engelm. was never validated." [J. Strother, in a pers. comm. to Greenhouse, agrees with Pinkava's analysis], so that Opuntia californica (Torr. & A. Gray) Coville therefore is the correct name for the taxon in California when it is included in Opuntia [but see Correspondence 2]. | |||||

| Editorial Comments 2 | Correspondence 2 indicates that, according to Marc Baker (The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1] co-author for Opuntia), there now is wide acceptance of Cylindropuntia for the "true chollas", so that [also for reasons discussed in Correspondence 1] Cylindropuntia californica (Torr. & A. Gray) F. M. Knuth (in C. Backeberg & F.M. Knuth, Kaktus-ABC 125 (1935) is to be used for the taxon treated in The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1] as Opuntia parryi. | |||||
