Information from the Index of California Plant Names (ICPN)
Initial Editorial Analysis 19 Feb 2004
Notes on Authorship of Name = Authors of Plant Names
Source of Report for California California Native Plant Society On-line Inventory - 6th edition, 2001. Known only from one occurrence near Moss Beach...
Initial Editorial Comments probably as Linanthus androsaceus Greene subsp. croceus (Milliken) H. Mason, listed as synonym of Linanthus parviflorus in The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1] [but see Editorial Comments 1]; author citation uncertain
Editorial Recommendation author citation to be checked [resolved]
Correspondence and Comments Subsequent to Initial Analysis
Correspondence 1 10 Jul 2003 e-mail from Richard Moe see Comment 1
Editorial Comments 1 Correspondence 1 indicates that Linanthus androsaceus Greene subsp. croceus (Milliken) H. Mason is based on Linanthus parviflorus var. croceus Milliken UCPubs 2: 59 (type locality: San Mateo County; collected by Eastwood May 19 1901), that Linanthus androsaceus Greene var. croceus (Eastwood) Jepson is based on Linanthus croceus Eastwood Bot Gaz 37: 442 (type locality: Pt. San Pedro, San Mateo County; collected by Eastwood May 9 1901), and that Jepson (Flora of California 3(2): 213) treated both basionyms as synonyms of Linanthus androsaceus. [Therefore, statement in Comments is incorrect.]
Correspondence 2 2 Feb 20004 e-mail from Doreen Smith see Comment 2
Editorial Comments 2 Correspondence 2 indicates that several taxonomic and nomenclatural changes in this group were made by Battaglia & Patterson in Madrono 48:62-78, 2001. [including Linanthus croceus Eastw. treated as Leptosiphon croceus (Eastw.) J. M. Porter & L. A. Johnson]
Correspondence 3 23 Apr 2004 e-mail from Margriet Wetherwax, including copy of e-mail from Wetherwax to Misa Ward see Comment 3
Editorial Comments 3 Correspondence 3 cites two other papers of relevance: Bell, C. D., and R. Patterson. 2000. Molecular phylogeny and biogeography of Linanthus (Polemoniaceae). Amer. J. Bot. 87(12):1857-1870; Porter, J. M., and L. A. Johnson. 2000. A phylogenetic classification of Polemoniaceae. Aliso 19(1): 55-91.
Correspondence 4 3 Mar 2016 e-mail from John Strother see Comment 4
Editorial Comments 4 Correspondence 4 includes a link to a paper (Strother, J.L. & K.R. Kersh. 2016. Typifications of Linanthus parviflorus var. croceus Milliken and Linanthus croceus Eastw. Phytoneuron 2016-21: 1–2. Published 3 March 2016. ISSN 2153 733X) in which one specimen (UC106861) is designated as lectotype of Linanthus parviflorus (Benth.) Greene var. croceus Milliken, and another (CAS393) is considered to be the holotype of Linanthus croceus Eastw., meaning that the type collections of these two names did not come from a single gathering as had been interpreted previously; it was also determined that the "Basionym for "Leptosiphon croceus (Eastw.) J.M. Porter & L.A. Johnson," Aliso 19: 80. 28 Jul 2000, was incorrectly cited as "Linanthus croceus Eastw., Pl. hartw., 325. 1849." [the name was instead published in Bot. Gaz. 37: 442–443. 20 June 1904; although Art. 41.6 of the Melbourne Code was first thought by the authors to allow them to treat this as a bibliographic error that could be corrected, they stated that "Evidently, Art. 41.7 applies and 'Leptosiphon croceus (Eastw.) J.M. Porter & L.A. Johnson' was not validly published in 2000", resulting in their publishing the combination as Leptosiphon croceus (Eastw.) Strother & Kersh. [Therefore, author citation of Current Name changed to Leptosiphon croceus (Eastw.) Strother & Kersh, from Leptosiphon croceus (Eastw.) J.M. Porter & L.A. Johnson previously in this Index, 3 Mar 2016.]
