Initial Editorial Comments spelling of epithet uncertain, "caryophylla" in Source a, "caryophyllea" in International Plant Names Index-Gray Card Index, IPNI-Index Kewensis, IPNI-APNI, and The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1]; var. not in IPNI, possibly ined.; not in IPNI as of 29 May 2001; according to Source b, status uncertain, possibly extirpated, spelling of epithet changed to "caryophyllea" (27 Feb 2003)
Editorial Recommendation spelling of epithet to be checked [resolved]; name evidently or possibly ined. [resolved]; author citation to be checked [resolved]
Correspondence and Comments Subsequent to Initial Analysis
Correspondence 1 $ 11 Apr 2002 e-mail from Richard Moe see Comment 1
Editorial Comments 1 Correspondence 1 indicates that correct author citation might be Aira caryophyllea var. cupaniana (Guss.) Cosson & Durand (or, more likely, Cosson & Durieu).
Correspondence 2 27 Oct 2003 e-mail from Jeff Greenhouse see Comment 2
Editorial Comments 2 Correspondence 2 indicates that this combination was published by Adriano Fiori (Fiori in Authors of Plant Names) in Flora Analitica d'Italia 1:67 (1896), and that the Cosson & Durand reference [under Editorial Comments 1] is an error for Cosson & Durieu de Maisonneuve (Coss. & Durieu in Authors of Plant Names) in Expl. Sci. Algerie 2:95 (1855), which in fact does not apply here because they published the epithet cupaniana at the rank of subvar. [Therefore, correct author citation is Aira caryophyllea L. var. cupaniana (Guss.) Fiori, as indicated in this Index.]\
Correspondence 3 Treatment and author notes submitted for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] see Comment 3
Editorial Comments 3 Correspondence 3 indicates, in a note under the genus, that Aira cupaniana Guss. [Aira caryophyllea L. var. cupaniana (Guss.) Fiori] was collected in Contra Costa Co. in 1995 but does not appear to have persisted.
