Current Jepson Flora Project Misapplied Names Centaurium floribundum (Benth.) B.L. Rob., misappl.; Centaurium muehlenbergii (Griseb.) Piper, misappl.
Initial Editorial Analysis 22 Aug 2002
Source of Report for California
a Best, C., J. T. Howell, W. Knight, I. Knight, and M. Wells. 1996. A Flora of Sonoma County. California Native Plant Society, Sacramento, as cited in Kartesz & Meacham
b Rosatti SMASCH notes: Evidently naturalized, based on label data, but not included in The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1]; not included for North America by Kartesz.
Initial Editorial Comments indicated only for California in Kartesz & Meacham; one record in SMASCH, JEPS79686 (Nancy Harrison 2144, 19 Jul 1980, Santa Rosa, Sonoma Co.)
Correspondence and Comments Subsequent to Initial Analysis
Correspondence 1 20 Aug 2002 e-mail from Jeff Greenhouse see Comment 1
Editorial Comments 1 Correspondence 1 indicates that, according to Frank Almeda, who is revising Howell's Marin Flora, Centaurium tenuiflorum is a European species that is naturalized in scattered localities in Marin Co. This, together with the Sonoma Co. records [evidently as reported by Best et al., and as represented by JEPS79686], yields a distribution in California of s NCoR (Sonoma Co.), n CCo (Marin Co.).
Correspondence 2 25 Jan 2005 e-mail from Bob Allen see Comment 2
Editorial Comments 2 Correspondence 2 indicates that Centaurium (Gentianaceae) has been split up and the California species placed in Zeltnera, citing Mansion, G. 2004. A new classification of the polyphyletic genus Centaurium Hill (Chironiidae-Gentianaceae): description of the New World endemic Zeltnera, and reinstatement of Gyrandra Griseb. and Schenkia Griseb. Taxon 53: 719-740. [Mansion evidently retains Centaurium tenuiflorum (Hoffmanns. & Link) Fritsch in Centaurium, since it is a European species; James S. Pringle, The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] author, is recognizing Zeltnera and probably will include this taxon for CA, but probably will retain it in Centaurium.]
Correspondence 3 Treatment and author notes submitted for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] by James S. Pringle see Comment 3
Editorial Comments 3 Correspondence 3 confirms that for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] the taxon will be retained in Centaurium, as naturalized in CA, as Centaurium tenuiflorum (Hoffmanns. & Link) Janch. [According to International Plant Names Index-APNI, the correct author citation is Centaurium tenuiflorum ( Hoffmanns. & Link ) Fritsch ex E. Jansen, so that author citation corrected to Centaurium tenuiflorum ( Hoffmanns. & Link ) Fritsch ex E. Jansen, from Centaurium tenuiflorum (Hoffmanns. & Link) Fritsch previously in this Index, 31 Jan 2007.]
Correspondence 4 Treatment and author notes submitted for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] by James S. Pringle see Comment 4
Editorial Comments 4 Correspondence 4 indicates that Centaurium tenuiflorum was published in Mitt. Naturwiss. Vereins Univ. Wien, ser. 2, 5: 97. 1907, and that the author therein is Janchen [Janch. in Authors of Plant Names], as indicated by TL2. [Therefore, author citation corrected to Centaurium tenuiflorum ( Hoffmanns. & Link ) Janch., from Centaurium tenuiflorum ( Hoffmanns. & Link ) Fritsch ex E. Jansen previously in this Index, 14 Nov 2007, even though protologue not seen, and therefore any possible attribution of the name to Fritsch neither proven nor disproven.]
