Correspondence and Comments Subsequent to Initial Analysis
Correspondence 1 17 Oct 2002 e-mail from Rudi Schmid, forwarded from A. Ceska, Botanical Electronic News, through Dick Moe see Comment 1
Editorial Comments 1 Correspondence 1 indicates that Chamaecyparis nootkatensis (D. Don) Spach. [Cupressus nootkatensis in The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1]] is related to a new species of Cupressaceae from poorly inventoried limestone formations in northern Vietnam, and that the two species comprise a new genus, Xanthocyparis Farjon & Hiep, citing Farjon, A., N.T. Hiep, D.K. Harder, P.K. Loc, & L. Averjanov. 2002. A new genus and species in Cupressaceae (Coniferales) from northern Vietnam, Xanthocyparis vietnamensis. Novon 12: 179-189; the new combination for Chamaecyparis nootkatensis (D. Don) Spach is Xanthocyparis nootkatensis (D. Don) Farjon & Hiep.
Correspondence 2 9 Jan 2003 e-mail from Jeff Greenhouse see Comment 2
Editorial Comments 2 Correspondence 2 indicates that Gadek et al. (Amer. J. Bot. 87: 1044--1057. 2000) present molecular evidence that Chamaecyparis nootkatensis belongs in Cupressus, and that Jim A. Bartel (The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1] author for Cupressaceae) agrees with this conclusion.
Correspondence 3 Treatment submitted for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] by Jim A. Bartel see Comment 3
Editorial Comments 3 Correspondence 3 indicates that for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] Cupressus nootkatensis D. Don is to be treated as Callitropsis nootkatensis (D. Don) Florin.
Correspondence 4 2 Sep 2009 e-mail from Jim A. Bartel see Comment 4
Editorial Comments 4 Correspondence 4 is a reference to a complicated and rather lengthy discussion of the nomenclature of this genus and species by Debreczy et al. (2009 Phytologia 91:140-159), in which it is indicated that on 17 Jan 2009 "Callitropsis nootkatensis Oerst. nom. inval." and "Callitropsis nootkatensis Oerst. ex Florin" were both posted to International Plant Names Index, and that as of 26 Jan 2009, Callitropsis nootkatensis Oerst. ex Florin also was declared a nom. inval., and the name was validated as Callitropsis nootkatensis (D. Don) Florin ex D. P. Little, Syst Bot 31(3):474, with Cupressus nootkatensis D. Don indicated as basionym. [Therefore, author citation corrected to Callitropsis nootkatensis (D. Don) Florin ex D. P. Little, from Callitropsis nootkatensis (D. Don) Florin previously in this Index, 2 Sep 2009.]
