Correspondence and Comments Subsequent to Initial Analysis
Correspondence 1 4 Sep 2007 e-mail from John Strother see Comment 1
Editorial Comments 1 Correspondence 1 indicates that, for filing in UC/JEPS, Strother is using Eriophyllum lanatum var. achillioides (as in Flora North America), rather than Eriophyllum lanatum var. achillaeoides (as in JepsMan). [Art. 60.8 states that "the use of a compounding form contrary to Rec. 60G in an adjectival epithet is treated as an error to be corrected.", although Rec. 60G indicates that before a consonant (not the case here), a connecting vowel (-i- for Latin elements, -o- for Greek elements) is to be added. Nevertheless, spelling of epithet corrected to Eriophyllum lanatum (Pursh) J. Forbes var. achillioides (DC.) Jeps., from Eriophyllum lanatum (Pursh) J. Forbes var. achillaeoides (DC.) Jeps. previously in this Index, 5 Sep 2007.]
Correspondence 2 6 Sep 2007 e-mail from Jeff Greenhouse see Comment 2
Editorial Comments 2 Correspondence 2 indicates: that this combination was published (as var. achillaeoides) by Jeps. (A Manual of the Flowering Plants of California 1118. 1925), based on Bahia achillaeoides DC. (Prodromus Systematis Naturalis Regni Vegetabilis 5: 657. 1836); that ICBN (2000) Art. 60.1 gives a number of reasons that the original spelling of an epithet can be properly corrected; that the ligature (ç) could be separated, following Art. 60.6, giving achillaeoides (as was done by Jepson); and that recent exchanges between K. Gandhi and J. Strother [also archived in Eudora mailbox "done ICPN".] conclude that, although De Candolle didn't state so, he in fact did base the epithet on the genus Achillea, meaning that "achillaeoides" is an orthographic error to be corrected by combining the suffix -oides with the stem achille- to give achilleoides. [Therefore, spelling of epithet corrected to Eriophyllum lanatum (Pursh) J. Forbes var. achilleoides (DC.) Jeps., from Eriophyllum lanatum (Pursh) J. Forbes var. achillioides (DC.) Jeps. previously in this Index, 19 Sep 2007.]
