Correspondence and Comments Subsequent to Initial Analysis
Correspondence 1 | 3 Jan 2002 e-mail from Barbara Ertter see Comment 1
Editorial Comments 1 | Correspondence 1 indicates that all specimens in UC/JEPS annotated as Trifolium depauperatum var. stenophyllum by Gillett [presumably, for Flora North America] are being filed as Trifolium depauperatum var. truncatum, reflecting previous annotations in concordance with Jepson Manual taxonomy but subject to change pending current research by Mike Vincent.
Correspondence 2 | 3 Jan 2002 e-mail from Barbara Ertter (forwarded e-mail from Michael A. Vincent) see Comment 2
Editorial Comments 2 | Correspondence 2 indicates confirmation of Current Status by Michael A. Vincent, who indicates that the epithet "truncatum" predates "stenophyllum" at the rank of var. by 16 years.
Correspondence 3 | 16 Jul 2002 e-mail from Barbara Ertter, including forwarded e-mail from Michael Vincent see Comment 3
Editorial Comments 3 | Correspondence 3 indicates that, according to Michael A. Vincent: Trifolium depauperatum Desv. var. amplectens (Torr. & A. Gray) McDermott and Trifolium depauperatum Desv. var. truncatum (Greene) Isely are best distinguished by the fruits, not stipitate and 3-4+/- mm long (var. amplectens).vs. stipitate and 2-3+/- mm long (var. truncatum) [essentially repeats key characters from The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1]]; also, that T. amplectens var. diversifolium (Nutt.) Jeps. is a synonym of T. depauperatum var. truncatum (Greene) McDerm., and we use truncatum instead of diversifolium since McDermott's varietal name predates Jepson's by 15 years [significance unclear].
Correspondence 4 | 20 Mar 2008 e-mail from Jeff Greenhouse see Comment 4
Editorial Comments 4 | Correspondence 4 indicates that Trifolium depauperatum var. truncatum was published by Isely in Brittonia 32:56 (1980), and that Isely ascribed the combination to "Martin ex Isely", in reference to James Stillman Martin's (J.S. Martin in Authors of Plant Names) unpublished thesis. [Therefore, author citation expanded to Trifolium depauperatum Desv. var. truncatum (Greene) J. S. Martin ex Isely, from Trifolium depauperatum Desv. var. truncatum (Greene) Isely previously in this Index, 21 Mar 2008.]
