Correspondence and Comments Subsequent to Initial Analysis
Correspondence 1 Treatment and author notes submitted since The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] by Genevieve K. Walden see Comment 1
Editorial Comments 1 Correspondence 1 indicates that since The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] Hydrophyllum capitatum Douglas ex Benth. var. alpinum S. Watson (1871) is to be recognized as a species, at which rank the name Hydrophyllum alpestre A. Nelson & P. B. Kenn. (1908) is correct, because Hydrophyllum alpinum (S. Watson) Greene ex Brand (1913) was published in synonymy and therefore is not validly published. [It is also true that, at the rank of species, Hydrophyllum alpestre A. Nelson & P. B. Kenn., published in 1908, has priority over Hydrophyllum alpinum (S. Watson) Greene ex Brand, published in 1913, even though the latter was based on Hydrophyllum capitatum Douglas ex Benth. var. alpinum S. Watson, published in 1871, because, according to ICBN (Melbourne Code), Art. 11.2, "A name has no priority outside the rank in which it is published". In publishing Hydrophyllum alpestre A. Nelson & P. B. Kenn., the authors commented that "The name _alpinum_ is preoccupied in this genus." This wording usually applies to entities that authors believe represent other taxa, but the only "alpinums" listed in Hydrophyllum in International Plant Names Index do not represent other taxa: Hydrophyllum capitatum Douglas ex Benth. var. alpinum S. Watson (1871), which existed at the time the comment was published (in 1908), and Hydrophyllum alpinum (S. Watson) Greene ex Brand (1913), which did not. Whatever the case, the comment may help explain why "alpinum" was not used for the species by A. Nelson & P. B. Kenn..]
