| Editorial Comments 2 | Correspondence 2 indicates that the correct name for this taxon has been controversial, with one camp supporting Spergularia marina (L.) Besser and the other Spergularia salina J. Presl & C. Presl; that in about 2004 an aborted attempt was made to propose rejection of Spergularia marina [see following for author citation] on the grounds that it is ambiguous, which is why Spergularia salina J. Presl & C. Presl was the name originally used in the treatment for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2]; but that a paper by Kirchner (2007 Preslia 79:323-365) resolved the issue in favor of Spergularia marina (L.) Besser, which turned out to be, based on a detailed argument, the earliest name at the rank of species for the taxon in question. [According to Kirchner (2007), the name is often cited Spergularia marina (L.) Griseb., as it was in The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1] and therefore originally in this Index as well, but no explanation for the change to Besser was put forth. Therefore, author citation changed, evidently corrected, to Spergularia marina (L.) Besser, from Spergularia marina (L.) Griseb. previously in this Index, 31 May 2010.] | |||||
