Initial Editorial Comments author citation uncertain, C. Presl ex DC. in Kartesz & Meacham
Editorial Recommendation author citation to be checked [resolved]
Correspondence and Comments Subsequent to Initial Analysis
Correspondence 1 19 Aug 2002 e-mail from Jeff Greenhouse see Comment 1
Editorial Comments 1 Correspondence 1 indicates that DC ascribed the name to C. Presl in publishing it, and that C. Presl may have intended to but evidently did not publish the name himself. Thus, the correct author citation is C. Presl ex DC. [Author citation corrected to Sambucus mexicana C. Presl ex DC. from Sambucus mexicana C. Presl originally in The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1].]
Correspondence 2 23 Dec 2004 e-mail from Bob Allen see Comment 2
Editorial Comments 2 Correspondence 2 indicates that, according to a review by Schmid [1995. Madroño 42(3): 422], treatment of California taxa in a worldwide monograph of Sambucus by Richard Bolli [1994. Dissertation Botanicç, vol. 223, pp. (i-ii), 1-227-(256); not seen] involves the following changes: Sambucus mexicana treated as Sambucus nigra subsp. canadensis; Sambucus melanocarpa treated as Sambucus racemosa var. melanocarpa; and Sambucus racemosa var. microbotrys treated as Sambucus racemosa var. racemosa.]
Correspondence 3 Treatment submitted for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] by Charles D. Bell see Comment 3
Editorial Comments 3 Correspondence 3 indicates that for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2], Sambucus mexicana C. Presl ex DC. [treated as synonym of Sambucus nigra L. subsp. canadensis (L.) Bolli by Bolli, who indicated the latter no nearer to California than sw Texas] is to be treated as having been misapplied to pls in California belonging instead to Sambucus nigra L. subsp. caerulea Bolli.
Correspondence 4 Treatment and author notes submitted for Revision 10 of the Jepson eFlora, as well as 11 May 2022 e-mail from Bruce Baldwin see Comment 4
Editorial Comments 4 Correspondence 4 indicates that, according Whittemore [Journal of the Botanical Research Institute of Texas 12(1): 69-73. 2018], Presl's original material [on which Sambucus mexicana C. Presl ex DC. is based] matches plants from the area around Monterey, California, and clearly differs from Sambucus taxa in other parts of North America, and that the name Sambucus mexicana C. Presl ex DC., a name that has priority over Sambucus nigra L. subsp. caerulea (Raf.) Bolli, is to be used for this taxon (but not for plants from central Mexico to which it has been applied).
