| Editorial Comments 1 | Correspondence 1 indicates that four trees belonging to Quercus robur L. occur on private property near Branciforte Creek in the lower elevations of the Santa Cruz Mountains, including one older tree, thought to be planted and estimated to be about 200 years old, and three younger trees, estimated to be about 100 years old, positioned near the old one in a way that does not suggest that they were planted, but rather are the result of sexual reproduction (a possible pollen donor is a large tree known until recently in downtown Santa Cruz, less than 5 miles down Branciforte Creek from the four trees under discussion), even though there was no evidence that the younger trees were reproducing. [Although it is possible that the younger trees reproduced in the past, until it is demonstrated that they have done so or are doing so, it seems most appropriate to treat them as waifs.] | |||||
