Correspondence and Comments Subsequent to Initial Analysis
Correspondence 1 16 May 2003 e-mail from Barbara Ertter (including e-mail from John Thieret) see Comment 1
Editorial Comments 1 Correspondence 1 indicates that, according to John Thieret, author of Phytolaccaceae in Flora North America, the epithet was originally published, and therefore is correctly spelled, "heterotepala" and not "heteropetala" (Thieret also points out that Phytolacca has no petals), and that Phytolacca heterotepala was accepted "with reservations" pending study of a sufficient number of specimens. [Spelling of epithet corrected to "heterotepala", from "heteropetala"previously in this Index, 22 May 2003.]
Correspondence 2 Treatment of Phytolaccaceae in Flora North America (2003. 4 see Comment 2
Editorial Comments 2 Correspondence 2 indicates that in the treatment of Phytolaccaceae in Flora North America (2003. 4:3--11), co-authored by John W. Thieret (The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] Author), Phytolacca heterotepala H. Walter is indicated only for CA, based on a report by J. T. Howell [1960. A Mexican pokeberry in San Francisco, California. Leafl. W. Bot. 9: 81-83], but that its current status in the flora is uncertain,
Correspondence 3 Treatment submitted for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] by John W. Thieret see Comment 3
Editorial Comments 3 Correspondence 3 indicates that for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] Phytolacca heterotepala H. Walter is to be treated in California as a waif.
