c | Hrusa et al., Madrono 49(2)61-98. 2002: DIST: SnJV: Hrusa et al. Current Status: Casual: DOC: Merced County: Highway 33 about 3 miles S of southern outskirts of Gustine; moist roadside ditch near Main Canal at Pfitzer Road; T08S, R09E, Sec 29, MD. 37°12'28"N; 121°00'37"W; Howard Ranch quad., el. 110ft. Large areas were being grown (presumably for dairy silage) within about a half mile upstream of the site above. Although there was a sizable population, the occurrence could be attributed to seed washing downslope along the ditch alignment. In the Jepson Manual (pg. 1296), this name was misapplied to Setaria pumila (Poir.) R. & S. as the synonymized combination Setaria glauca (L.) P. Beauv.
Initial Editorial Comments | indicated for nearly all of NA, except AK to Greenland, in Kartesz & Meacham; according to Source c, in California occurring as a waif (27 Feb 2003).

Correspondence 1 | Treatment and author notes submitted for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] see Comment 1
Editorial Comments 1 | Correspondence 1 indicates, in a note under the genus, that Pennisetum glaucum (L.) R. Br. is included among a list of taxa that "have been collected in CA" but have not "become naturalized". [Unfortunately, the treatment does not indicate more precisely the status of Pennisetum glaucum (L.) R. Br. relative to the flora of California (e.g., is it a waif, or does it not occur presently in California at all?). As an active waif, the taxon would have been included in the key to members of the genus, with a description only online; the fact that the taxon was not treated this way suggests it might have been considered to be an historical waif. ]
