Initial Editorial Analysis 19 May 2009
Source of Report for California | Munz, P.A. in collaboration with D. D. Keck. 1968, as cited in Kartesz & Meacham
Initial Editorial Comments | said in Appendix III, The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1], to be not naturalized in CA
Editorial Recommendation | author citation to be checked [resolved]
Correspondence and Comments Subsequent to Initial Analysis
Correspondence 1 | Treatment and author notes submitted for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] by Piet Vorster see Comment 1
Editorial Comments 1 | Correspondence 1 indicates that for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] Pelargonium capitatum (L.) L'Hér. ex Aiton is to be treated as a waif, in part because it is ecologically tolerant, having a wide natural distribution along the South Afr coastline and an even larger distribution as weed in Australia, so that it should be sought outside cult in CA.[Apparently, there is a lack of evidence that the plants are naturalized (reproducing in any way outside of cult) in CA, so that a Current Status of Jepson Flora Project-3 seems most appropriate at this time.]
Correspondence 2 | 22 May 2009 e-mail from Piet Vorster see Comment 2
Editorial Comments 2 | Correspondence 2 indicates, without explanation, that the correct author citation is Pelargonium capitatum (L.) L'Hér.. [Therefore, author citation changed to Pelargonium capitatum (L.) L'Hér., from Pelargonium capitatum (L.) L'Hér. ex Aiton previously in this Index, 22 May 2009, despite the fact that it is (was?) Pelargonium capitatum (L.) L'Hér. ex Aiton in Kartesz & Meacham, and is Pelargonium capitatum (L.) Aiton in International Plant Names Index-APNI, a discrepancy that, in view of the lack of explanation from Vorster, necessitates further inquiry.]
Correspondence 3 | 27 May 2009 e-mail from Piet Vorster see Comment 3
Editorial Comments 3 | Correspondence 3 indicates that the correct author citation for Pelargonium capitatum, based on Geranium capitatum L., is (L.) l'Hér., because L'Héritier published the combination in Aiton's Hortus kewensis ed. 1, 2: 268 (1789), wherein he was credited by Aiton as being the publishing author, so that l'Hér. ex Aiton would not be correct.
