Correspondence and Comments Subsequent to Initial Analysis
Correspondence 1 Treatment and author notes submitted for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] see Comment 1
Editorial Comments 1 Correspondence 1 indicates, in a note under the genus, that "there are historical collections of red rice, Oryza rufipogon Griff. ... from GV, but no evidence of its being naturalized." [Treatment of Oryza rufipogon Griffiths as an historical waif is consistent with the fact the taxon is not included in a key to members of the genus. Active waifs are included in The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] in such keys, with a description appearing only online. Also, according to International Plant Names Index, the author citation is Griff., consistent with The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] but not this Index; in Authors of Plant Names, Griff. = William Griffith, 1810-1845, and although the protologue was not published until 1851, according to IPNI, six years after the death of William Griffith, the birth dates given for all the authors in Authors of Plant Names with an abbreviation including "Griffiths"are later than 1851, strongly suggesting that Griff. is correct. Therefore, author citation changed to Oryza rufipogon Griff., from Oryza rufipogon Griffiths previously in this Index, 11 Aug 2011.]
