Correspondence and Comments Subsequent to Initial Analysis
Correspondence 1 19 Aug 2014 e-mail from Dave Keil, including forwarded e-mail from John Strother see Comment 1
Editorial Comments 1 Correspondence 1 indicates that when Hedypnois cretica (L.) Dum.Cours. and Hedypnois rhagadioloides (L.) F. W. Schmidt are treated as conspecific (which is the opinion of Keil, as author of the genus for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] and the Jepson eFlora), the correct name is Hedypnois rhagadioloides (L.) F. W. Schmidt, because these two names are based on names that (at the level of species) have equal priority (Hyoseris cretica L., Sp. Pl. 2:810. 1753, and Hyoseris rhagadioloides L., Sp. Pl. 2:809. 1753) and because that was the choice made in what is evidently the first effective publication in which these taxa are united, Webb & Berthelot, Hist. Nat. Iles Canarien 3(2) (1848) 397. [According to Art. 11.5, ICBN (Melbourne Code), "When, for any taxon of the rank of family or below, a choice is possible between legitimate names of equal priority in the corresponding rank, or between available final epithets of names of equal priority in the corresponding rank, the first such choice to be effectively published (Art. 29–31) establishes the priority of the chosen name ..." Therefore, a change in Current Status, from Jepson Flora Project-2 to Jepson Flora Project-2a, is appropriate at this time in lieu of evidence to the contrary.]
