Correspondence 2 indicates: that Koeleria cristata was published by C.H. Persoon (Pers. in Authors of Plant Names) in Synopsis Plantarum 1:97 (1805); that Persoon cited "Poa cristata auctorum" as a synonym without specifying any particular basionym; that Persoon was not citing the illegitimate name Poa cristata L. as basionym because, on the same page, he cited that name as a synonym of Koeleria phleoides; that Persoon's name is therefore to be considered a new name Koeleria cristata Pers.; that under Persoon's species, he named three varieties, the third of which, var. pyramidata, was based on Poa pyramidata Lam. (Tableau Encyclopédique et Methodique ... Botanique 1:183. 1791), which means that pyramidata is the earliest available epithet for this taxon at species rank, thus making Koeleria cristata Pers. a superfluous and illegitimate synonym of Koeleria pyramidata (Lam.) P. Beauv., which likewise has been misapplied to Koeleria macrantha (Ledeb.) Schult.. [Therefore, author citation of The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1] synonym corrected to Koeleria cristata Pers. nom. superfl., from Koeleria cristata (L.) Pers. previously in this Index, 29 Apr 2009; also, Koeleria cristata Pers. nom. superfl. is not a synonym of Koeleria macrantha (Ledeb.) Schult., but rather a synonym of Koeleria pyramidata (Lam.) P. Beauv., and these two names have both been misapplied to Koeleria macrantha (Ledeb.) Schult.]

Correspondence 3 includes reference to a paper (Quintanar & Castroviejo. 2013. Syst. Bot. 38: 1029-1061) in which the authors conclude that Koeleria macrantha (Ledeb.) Schult. (1824), based on Aira macrantha Ledeb. (1815), and Koeleria pyramidata (Lam.) P. Beauv. (1812), based on Poa pyramidata Lam. (1791) are the same species, for which the earlier epithet at the rank of species is pyramidata, so that [according to Art. 11.4 of ICBN, Melbourne Code] the correct name is Koeleria pyramidata (Lam.) P. Beauv. [with therefore as synonyms Aira macrantha Ledeb., Koeleria macrantha (Ledeb.) Schult, and Poa pyramidata Lam.], a species in which Koeleria pyramidata (Lam.) P. Beauv. subsp. pyramidata is recognized for plants in temperate parts of Eurasia and North America including CA.
