Information from the Index of California Plant Names (ICPN)
Initial Editorial Analysis 29 Jun 2009
Source of Report for California The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1]
Correspondence and Comments Subsequent to Initial Analysis
Correspondence 1 Treatment and author notes submitted for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] by Alan T. Whittemore see Comment 1
Editorial Comments 1 Correspondence 1 indicates that for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] Juglans regia L. is to be treated as a waif in CA, downgraded from naturalized in The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1], essentially because although the plants reproduce in the vicinity of planted trees, the new plants do not persist for long, possibly due at least in part to their extreme susceptibility to Armillaria, as well as the fact they are much favored by gophers; Correspondence 1 also indicates that numerous persons have indicated (pers. comms.) that they have never seen self-maintaining populations in CA.
