·

Information from the Index of California Plant Names (ICPN)

Initial Editorial Analysis 2 Aug 2011
Source of Report for California The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1]
Initial Editorial Comments author citation uncertain, (L.) Desv. ex B. D. Jackson in Kartesz & Meacham, as synonym of Elymus repens (L.) Gould; author citation of The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1] synonym corrected by unknown person from Beauv. (in Draft Index; Beauvis. in Authors of Plant Names) in The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1]
Editorial Recommendation author citation to be checked [resolved]
Correspondence and Comments Subsequent to Initial Analysis
Correspondence 1 10 Aug 2006 e-mail from Jeff Greenhouse see Comment 1
Editorial Comments 1 Correspondence 1 indicates that Elytrigia repens, based on Triticum repens L., was published by Benjamin D. Jackson (B.D. Jacks. in Authors of Plant Names) in Index Kewensis 1:836 (1893), and that Jackson ascribed the combination to Desv. [Therefore, author citation corrected to Elytrigia repens (L.) Desv. ex B. D. Jacks., from Elytrigia repens (L.) Nevski previously in this Index, 15 Aug 2006.]
Correspondence 2 20 Aug 2009 e-mail from Jeff Greenhouse see Comment 2
Editorial Comments 2 Correspondence 2 indicates that the correct author citation for Elytrigia repens isn't as clear-cut as it seemed to him three years ago [Correspondence 1]. Correspondence 2 indicates: that Jackson, in the Index Kewensis publication referenced in Correspondence 1, listed Elytrigia repens Desv. as a synonym of Agropyron repens; that Desvaux (Nouveau Bulletin des Sciences, Publie par la Société Philomatique de Paris 2:190. 1810) did not make the combination [Elytrigia repens]; that on further study it appears that Jackson didn't accept the genus Elytrigia, considering it a synonym of Agropyron; that Jackson's listing of Elytrigia repens Desv. as a synonym of Agropyron repens doesn't qualify as valid publication [of Elytrigia repens]; and that the first valid publication of Elytrigia [repens] appears to be by S.A. Nevski (Nevski in Authors of Plant Names) in Trudy Botanicheskogo Instituta Akademii Nauk S S S R. Ser. 1, 1:14 (1933), who incorrectly ascribed the name to Desvaux and provided an indirect basionym reference to Triticum repens L. [Therefore, author citation corrected to Elytrigia repens (L.) Desv. ex Nevski, from Elytrigia repens (L.) Desv. ex B. D. Jacks. previously in this Index, 20 Aug 2009.]
