Correspondence 1 | 5 Sep 2006 pers. comm. from Jeff Greenhouse see Comment 1
Editorial Comments 1 | Correspondence 1 is a reference to Peter F. Zika (Madrono 52:208. 2005), wherein it is stated that Cotoneaster simonsii Baker is "adventive in thickets" in Del Norte Co., California [according to at least one edition of Webster's, adventive means "introduced but not fully naturalized", and it is synonymous with "waif" in the Guide For Authors for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2]], but also suggested that the species is naturalized in the state, with the statement that it is "easily distinguished from the other three naturalized species in California." [the key word being "other"].
Correspondence 2 | Treatment and author notes submitted for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] by Peter Zika see Comment 2
Editorial Comments 2 | Correspondence 2 indicates that for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] Cotoneaster simonsii Baker is to be treated as naturalized in CA.
Correspondence 3 | 4 Apr 2014 e-mail from Peter Zika to Margriet Wetherwax, including pdf of Phytotaxa 164(2) see Comment 3
Editorial Comments 3 | Correspondence 3 indicates that, according to Fryer & Zika [Phytotaxa 164(2)149--153. 2014], Cotoneaster symondsii Moore (1861) should not be considered synonymous with Cotoneaster simonsii Baker (1869) because the foliar characters presented in the protologue of Cotoneaster symondsii Moore are not a good match for Cotoneaster simonsii Baker, so that, in the absence of original material, they selected a neotype for Cotoneaster symondsii Moore that is in accordance with its protologue and that places it in synonymy with Cotoneaster marginatus Lindley ex Loudon (1842), which evidently does not occur in CA, at least outside of cultivation. [Cotoneaster symondsii Moore (1861), the earlier name, would be the correct name for the taxon were it considered to be synonymous with Cotoneaster simonsii Baker (1869).]
