Editorial Recommendation author citation to be checked [resolved]
Correspondence and Comments Subsequent to Initial Analysis
Correspondence 1 30 Aug 2004 e-mail from Jeff Greenhouse see Comment 1
Editorial Comments 1 Correspondence 1 indicates that in Flora North America 23:288 (2002), Carex retroflexa var. texensis is treated as Carex texensis, its The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1]1 synonym, and Carex rosea Schkuhr ex Willdenow var. texensis Torrey ex L. H. Bailey (Mem. Torrey Bot. Club 1: 57. 1889) is given as the basionym of Carex texensis (Torrey ex L. H. Bailey) L. H. Bailey (Mem. Torrey Bot. Club. 5: 97. 1894). [Therefore, author citation to be corrected to Carex texensis (Torr. ex L. H. Bailey) L. H. Bailey, from Carex texensis (Torr.) L. H. Bailey presently in this Index, pending verification.]
Correspondence 2 10 Jan 2008 e-mail from Jeff Greenhouse see Comment 2
Editorial Comments 2 Correspondence 2 indicates that Carex rosea var. texensis, the basionym for Carex texensis and Carex retroflexa var. texensis, was published by L.H. Bailey (=Authors of Plant Names) in Memoirs of the Torrey Botanical Club 1(1): 57 (1889), and that Bailey cited Torrey's earlier publication of the name (Annals of the Lyceum of Natural History of New-York 3:389. 1836), which was a nom. nud., but supplied his own description (giving Torr. ex L.H. Bailey), thus verifying the pending author citation corrections for Carex texensis and Carex retroflexa var. texensis indicated by Correspondence 1. [Therefore, author citation corrected to Carex texensis (Torr. ex L. H. Bailey) L. H. Bailey, from Carex texensis (Torr.) L. H. Bailey previously in this Index, 10 Jan 2008.]
Correspondence 3 8 Feb 2008 e-mail from Jeff Greenhouse see Comment 3
Editorial Comments 3 Correspondence 3 indicates: that anyone checking Bailey's publication of Carex texensis in 1894 will note that Bailey provided no description and cited only Torrey's 1836 publication of Carex rosea var texensis, which also lacked a description; that Carex texensis therefore would appear, at least on the surface, to be a nom. nud. and invalid [keep reading]; that it is necessary to note, however, that Bailey himself in 1889 cited Torrey's nom. nud. when he validated Carex rosea var. texensis Torr. ex L.H. Bailey with his own description; and that Bailey's reference to the 1836 publication by Torrey then serves as a very indirect basionym reference to his own 1889 publication and validates Carex texensis (Torr. ex L.H. Bailey) L.H. Bailey.
Correspondence 4 Treatment and author notes submitted for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] by Peter Zika, Andrew Hipp, & Joy Mastrogiuseppe see Comment 4
Editorial Comments 4 Correspondence 4 indicates that for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] Carex retroflexa Willd. var. texensis (Torr. ex L. H. Bailey) Fernald is to be treated as a synonym of Carex texensis (Torr. ex L.H. Bailey) L.H. Bailey, which is to be treated as naturalized in California based on 1 wild population, in a shady riparian zone (Zika 24982); the plants also are occasional lawn weeds, in at least three California counties, although such occurrences would not by themselves qualify the sp. for inclusion in the flora.
